Sports Physicals
The Virginia High School League requires that each athlete undergo a preparticipation physical before engaging in their sport. These cannot occur earlier than May 1 of the preceding school year. If your child's annual Well Child Visit occurs in this frame and there are no concerning findings that would make their sport unsafe, we can complete the Sports Physical form based on their Well Child Visit. You can just call us or send a message through our patient portal requesting we complete this form.
However, if your child has had an annual Well Child Visit before May 1, but still within the past year, we will schedule an appointment for a "Sports Update" to review your child's current status and key parts of their physical exam. These visits are offered at a very nominal fee, less than the cost of a "sports physical" at an urgent care and even less than most schools charge at their mass screening "clinics".
If your child has not had an annual Well Child Visit in the past year, we will schedule them for a routine well visit, at which time we can complete the sports physical forms. Most insurance plans cover the cost of routine well visits completely, so this may likely result in no charge to you!
Annual Well Child Visits are extremely important and serve a very different purpose than the Sports Physical. Having a "Sports Physical" done as part of a mass screening clinic put on by your child's school is not a replacement for their annual Well Child Visit. Our goals in offering these low cost "Sports Update" visits are to help support our families with student athletes while also encouraging Annual Well Child visits.
